About the Creators

LAUP: United for Progress ran as a temporary exhibit at the Holland Museum from August 2021 - January 2022 celebrating the deep impact the organization has had and continues to have in the Holland, Michigan community.

This complementary digital exhibit will keep the history and conversation alive beyond the six month run. The sponsors hope the digital nature of the exhibit will allow further community discussion , empowerment, and progress on vital social issues.

Holland Museum and ExploreHope Academic Outreach at Hope College came together to celebrate what's possible in student centered community partnerships. Jointly hosting a cultural heritage focused course, Documenting Holland's Historical Diversity, 16 students explored the powerful impact a museum and community partnerships can have in the atmosphere and sense of belonging of everyone in a community.

The story of these exhibits is worth telling because...

  • "...it highlights a part of local history a lot of citizens didn't know about."
  • "...highlighting the significant communal events, hosted by LAUP, is a great way to promote awareness and cohesion within the Holland Community."
  • "...it shows a great example of a minority group advocating for itself. I believe it is important to understand that struggle and how to do it because advocacy will always be a thing."
  • "...it shows how LAUP came to be and how it wants to continue to benefit the community and be a voice of advocacy for minorities going forward."
  • "...it is affecting students each and every day. The resources, mentorship, and support that a student is given helps them develop as a person and impacts their future."
  • "...[it shows] how many Latinx cultures came together during Fiesta to celebrate all Latinx heritages, creating unity and community."
  • "...it shows the perseverance of the Latinx community but also the strides that the Holland community must take in order to create not only equality, but equity within the community."
  • "...it brings to light how LAUP has created unity, community, and cultural awareness among all Latinx cultures within the Holland/Zeeland community."
  • "...people need to hear the experiences and the development of the Latinx community in Holland, and this exhibit provides an environment to learn."
