What Now?

The Queen contest shows Latinx tradition and empowers young women to create change in their community as well as become role models (changes the stereotype). 

At the time, the Queen competition utilized powerful cultural influences to create a mechanism to empower youth and support youth community role models. As the contest grew, it included male students and became the King and Queen contest. Presently, LAUP no longer holds the King and Queen contest. 

This digital exhibit is made possible by a partnership with the Hope College Van Wylen Library, members of the Fall 2021 IDS395 cultural heritage course, Joint Archives of Holland, MI, Holland Museum, and the Latin Americans United for Progress (LAUP).
