LAUP History

Introduction

Sparked by a flippant statement made at a 1978 Ottawa County Commissioners board meeting, a community conversation brought to light voices seeking social justice. The greater Holland community is made up of many different ethnicities and groups of people. However, the cultural narrative that is promoted is often missing key pieces. It is important that the whole story is told and people are informed. True progress comes when these voices are heard, respected, and believed. LAUP continues to rally to protect these voices and bridge gaps between cultures in Holland.

This specific event helped bring light to the underlying bias in the Holland community as a whole and demonstrated the need for the community to let go of their preconceived notions about different groups of people.
