Opening Summary
Who defines equal education? We like to think that education is equally available for everyone, but each student has diffrent experiences from the same education. Even though the education system is making strides to becoming more inclusive, it has a long history of being exclusive. This reality is present throughout the history of the education systems in Holland, MI.
Unfortunately, there is and has been a lack of resources for Latinx students in Holland schools, including Hope College. Because of this, education continues to be a barrier for the Latinx community. LAUP, has historically been a resource to Latinx students, lives into their vision "to be the center of influence in our Latino community that builds bridges to opportunities and creates pathways to success for all."
These statistics and artifacts will focus on the realities that Latinx students have and continue to face in Holland’s educational system. We invite you to think about your own educational experience: How did your education serve you? Who was the system designed for? What resources or opportunities were you given that shaped your future?
