Facing the Statistics

While the history shown in this exhibit is from over 40 years ago, it is important to recognize the current reality in the Holland community.

What has led to this? What does this mean for the current Latinx students in high school and college?

Education Levels of Latinx in Holland

This survey, conducted by LAUP in 2019, shows the education levels of Latinx respondents. The themes discussed in this exhibit, such as lack of representation and the few amount of resources catered towards supporting Latinx students are important because of these statistics. It is important to remember that education is a privilege, one that not everyone has access to.

Comparing Elementary Proficiency in Ottawa County

This survey, conducted by United Way in 2021, reveals that educational disparities present themselves as early as the 3rd grade. The concept of "start behind, stay behind" is true for many students who do not receive the support or resources they need at an early age.

Comparing Educational Attainment in Ottawa County

In the same survey by United Way, the educational attainment levels are compared between people from different ethnicities. This survey directly shows that the Hispanic community does not reach the same levels as Whites.

Representation in the High Schools

Elisabeth Salazar, the student we interviewed, shared her experience being in advanced classes in high school. In her more advanced classes a majority of her classmates were white. She told us that the less advanced classes were more diverse. "I specifically chose a less advanced english class because I was tired of being surrounded by white people."
